Volunteer

We want to make sure that volunteering with us is as fulfilling as possible and will do our best to ensure that the volunteering experience is positive, meets individual aspirations, is enjoyable and rewarding and contributes to enhanced health and wellbeing.

We strive to provide a safe, inclusive and friendly environment where development is nurtured and Volunteers progress. Our Volunteers are treated as individuals and their experiences of volunteering vary enormously.

Wherever possible we try to cater for the needs of everyone and if a little extra support is needed in whatever aspect, we can discuss that request.

We are always glad to welcome new people to our team. Volunteer time given can be anywhere from 3 hours per week up to 30 hours per week. How will you get involved?

Green Team drivers

Join The Green Team as a Volunteer Driver for one of our vehicles. Your role will be to transport a team of Volunteers in and around Goole to the locations where the gardens are to be maintained. The time commitment required is a minimum of 1 day per week.

You will need to be reliable, have good communication and listening skills, be a safe, confident driver, hold a full UK licence and enjoy meeting and helping people. Volunteer Drivers will be covered by The Green Team’s insurance policy when driving one of our vehicles. Whilst working with us you will be:

• giving your time to a local charity that benefits local people
• increasing your knowledge and skills
• meeting new people and working as part of a team
• getting to know people and places in the community
• helping people in need and making a difference

Volunteer Allotment Plots

We provide free, optional access to mini plots at our allotment site for our Volunteers.

We know that for many people the thought of taking on a full sized allotment plot is too great a responsibility but our mini plots are more manageable for most and an excellent way of having a go at growing produce. For those who feel they have limited skills and don’t feel very confident at the beginning, they can also take part as there are others in our team that enjoy offering support and passing on their valuable knowledge. Nurturing home grown produce encourages healthy eating and our Volunteers can choose to offer the produce that they have grown to their own family and friends or offer a little to us to sell as a boost for our funds. An additional benefit to having our allotment is that it enables us to be able to provide a space that can be an area of tranquillity when someone is looking for a sanctuary. Alternatively it can be a place that provides a valuable social meeting area for Volunteers who are looking for company or to make new friends.

Our Charity Garden Centre

At our West Park site in Goole, we have a mini garden centre where volunteers grow plants and produce and raise flowers to pot on into containers and hanging baskets – which are then sold to the public to raise funds for our charity.

This volunteering opportunity is suitable for anyone who has a love of gardening, pottering, planting seeds and nurturing plants.

You will be able to make new friends and become part of a friendly group whilst engaging in light activities.

All the staging is at waist height so if there are limitations on mobility, you are welcome to sit and work rather than stand. Also perfect for socialisation following an illness. This role is excellent for anyone that has a desire to get involved with our charity but who may find helping us to provide a garden maintenance service for our clients a struggle.

You are free to offer whatever time commitment you can – our organisation will be grateful to you for the time that you give.

We very much welcome donations of plants that you no longer want in your garden or are surplus to requirements, or ceramic outdoor or indoor plant pots / containers. A local collection service is available for large plants.

The garden centre is open to the public Tuesday and Thursday 10:00am – 3:30pm and is situated just next door is our cafe.

Opportunities for people out of work and students

Working for The Green Team can be a potential stepping-stone to employment. It offers the Volunteer invaluable skills which can be transferred to working life. The experience
that is gained has a motivating effect and helps to improve chances of future employment. We also offer references and can help with C.V’s.

The Green Team is able to offer training and experiences that moves the Volunteer closer to employability.  We offer work placement opportunities for individuals who are out of work or students
attending college and we often have referrals from local agencies and organisations.

Some of our Volunteers adopt a mentoring role – welcoming an opportunity to share their knowledge and skills. They take on tasks including motivating new comers; building confidence; offering information around volunteering; providing support. This can make a big difference to the confidence, self-esteem and aspirations of mentees.

Garden Maintenance Volunteer

Our Garden Maintenance Volunteers work on a range of tasks including grass cutting, using petrol mowers, cutting back hedges and weeding borders.

If you enjoy being outdoors and appreciate being active, becoming a Garden Maintenance Volunteer is certainly for you. You do not need prior gardening experience to join the team as we offer training in gardening and horticulture. All Volunteers are properly introduced to their role and are provided with ongoing support and training opportunities, tailored to individual needs and abilities to enable Volunteers to increase their skills and knowledge.

With your help and the generosity of our Volunteers who offer their time and commitment to the Green Team, we are able to provide garden maintenance for local communities and businesses.

Green Team Fundraiser

Are you an organised individual looking for a challenge? Are you passionate about your local community and want to get involved in celebrating the area in which you live? If so, this volunteering role is for you. We are looking for motivated Fundraising Volunteers and Event Organisers to join our team. You will be required to help, organise, manage and run events throughout the year.

This role is ideal for someone who:

• wants to develop new or existing skills in events
• is friendly, motivated and excited by helping others
• likes to meet new people and have new experiences
• is creative is organised

Skills needed: Ability to work as part of a team.

Skills gained: Team work. Organising. Talking to others.
